This finely embroidered Orthodox pocket icon depicts Saint Natalia of Nicomedia, a faithful Christian woman of the early Church who is remembered for her steadfast devotion to Christ and her unwavering support of her husband, the holy martyr Adrian of Nicomedia.
Saint Natalia lived during the persecutions under Emperor Maximian in the early fourth century. When her husband Adrian, a pagan officer of the imperial court, witnessed the courage of imprisoned Christians, he confessed Christ and was immediately imprisoned and sentenced to martyrdom. Natalia courageously strengthened her husband in his confession of faith, encouraging him to remain steadfast even unto death. After his martyrdom she continued in prayer and devotion, remaining a witness to the triumph of Christ over suffering and persecution.
Because of her fidelity, Saint Natalia is venerated in the Orthodox Church as a model of faithful Christian marriage, courage, and steadfast love in times of trial. She is often invoked by those seeking strength within marriage and perseverance in the Christian life.
