Saint Romanos Icon
**Description**
This 3.5x4-inch embroidered pocket icon or patch honors **Saint Romanos the Melodist**, one of the greatest hymnographers of the Orthodox Church and a beloved figure for lovers of sacred music. Whether carried in a prayer book, kept in your pocket, displayed on a prayer corner, or sewn onto a vestment or bag, this beautifully detailed piece is both devotional and educational—reminding us of the saint’s humble beginnings and divine gift for song.

**About Saint Romanos the Melodist**
Saint Romanos was born in the late 5th century in either Syria or Emesa (modern-day Homs). He served as a deacon in Beirut before moving to Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Anastasius I. Initially, he had little skill in singing or writing hymns, yet his deep love for God kept him devoted to liturgical service.

According to tradition, on the eve of the Nativity, the Theotokos appeared to him in a dream, giving him a scroll to eat. Upon waking, Romanos found himself gifted with a beautiful voice and poetic skill. That very day, he chanted his first and most famous kontakion, *“Today the Virgin gives birth to the Transcendent One.”*

Throughout his life, Saint Romanos composed hundreds of kontakia—many of which are still used in Orthodox worship today—covering the feasts of Christ, the Theotokos, and the saints. His works are marked by theological depth, poetic elegance, and a love for the beauty of worship. He reposed peacefully around the year 556 and is commemorated on **October 1**.
