Saint Maximus the Greek

Saint Maximus the Greek (c. 1470–1556) was a Greek monk, scholar, and theologian who became one of the most important figures in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. Born Michael Trivolis in Arta, Greece, he received a humanist education in Italy before embracing the monastic life on Mount Athos, where he took the name Maximus.

In 1516, Saint Maximus was sent to Moscow at the request of Grand Prince Vasily III to translate and correct liturgical and theological books. He spent the rest of his life in Russia, where he worked tirelessly to correct errors in Russian liturgical texts and to promote genuine Orthodox learning. Despite his invaluable contributions, he was twice condemned by Russian church councils on charges that were largely politically motivated, and he spent many years in monastic imprisonment.

Saint Maximus the Greek is venerated as a confessor and a great enlightener of Russia. He was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988. His feast day is January 21, shared with Saint Maximus the Confessor.
