Collection: Saint Mary Magdalene
Saint Mary Magdalene (1st century AD) is one of the most beloved and venerated saints in the Orthodox Church, honored with the title "Equal to the Apostles" and "Myrrh-Bearer." She was a devoted follower of Christ who was healed by Him of seven demons, and she remained faithful to Him through His Passion, standing at the foot of the Cross and witnessing His burial.
Saint Mary Magdalene was the first to behold the Risen Christ on the morning of the Resurrection, and it was to her that He first appeared and entrusted the proclamation of His Resurrection to the Apostles — making her the "Apostle to the Apostles." After Pentecost, she traveled to Rome, where she preached the Gospel before the Emperor Tiberius, presenting him with a red egg as a symbol of the Resurrection — the origin of the Orthodox tradition of red Paschal eggs.
Saint Mary Magdalene later traveled to Ephesus, where she reposed in peace. Her relics were later translated to Constantinople. Her feast day is July 22.
