Saint Joseph the Hesychast

Saint Joseph the Hesychast (1897–1959) was one of the greatest Athonite elders of the 20th century, a master of the Jesus Prayer and the hesychast tradition of inner prayer, and the spiritual father of a remarkable generation of monastic saints and elders who have renewed Orthodox monasticism in our time.

Born in Greece, he felt called to the monastic life from youth and eventually settled on Mount Athos, where he lived for decades in extreme poverty, asceticism, and unceasing prayer. Together with his brotherhood, he practiced the ancient Athonite tradition of all-night vigils, strict fasting, and the continual repetition of the Jesus Prayer. He was granted extraordinary gifts of divine vision, consolation, and spiritual discernment.

Saint Joseph's disciples include Elder Ephraim of Arizona, Elder Ephraim of Katounakia, and many other elders who have founded monasteries throughout the world. His letters, collected in Monastic Wisdom, are treasured as a guide to the interior life. He reposed on August 15, 1959 — the feast of the Dormition — and was glorified as a saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2020. His feast day is August 15.
