Saint Herman of Alaska

Saint Herman of Alaska (c. 1756–1837) is one of the most beloved saints of North America and the first saint glorified by the Orthodox Church in America. Born in Russia, he entered the Valaam Monastery as a young man and lived a life of deep prayer and ascetic struggle before being chosen for the Russian Orthodox mission to Alaska in 1794.

Settling on Spruce Island, which he called New Valaam, Saint Herman devoted himself entirely to the Alaskan native peoples — defending them against exploitation, educating their children, caring for the sick, and sharing in their poverty. He lived as a true desert father in the wilderness of Alaska, practicing severe asceticism while radiating warmth, compassion, and joy to all who came to him.

Known for his prophetic gifts and miracles both during his life and after his repose, Saint Herman was glorified as a saint in 1970 by the Orthodox Church in America. His feast day is December 13 (and August 9 for the glorification). He is the patron saint of the Americas and of all Orthodox Christians in North America.
