Saint George the Great Martyr

Saint George the Great Martyr (c. 275–303 AD) is one of the most beloved and widely venerated saints in the Orthodox Church, honored as a Great Martyr and Trophy-Bearer for his courageous witness to the Christian faith. Born into a noble Christian family in Cappadocia, he rose to become a distinguished officer in the Roman army under Emperor Diocletian.

When the Emperor issued edicts persecuting Christians, Saint George publicly declared his faith, distributed his wealth to the poor, and refused to renounce Christ. He endured extraordinary tortures with miraculous fortitude before being beheaded on April 23, 303 AD. His steadfast witness converted many to Christianity, including the Empress Alexandra herself.

Saint George is also celebrated in the beloved tradition of Saint George and the Dragon, a symbol of the triumph of faith over evil. He is the patron saint of soldiers, farmers, and many nations and cities throughout the Orthodox world. His feast day is April 23.
