Saint Alexander of Constantinople

Saint Alexander of Constantinople (c. 240–340 AD) served as Bishop of Constantinople and was a steadfast defender of Nicene orthodoxy during the tumultuous Arian controversy. He attended the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD and played a pivotal role in opposing the heresy of Arius. Tradition holds that on the very night Arius was to be received back into communion by imperial decree, Alexander prayed fervently through the night — and Arius died suddenly before the ceremony could take place. Saint Alexander is venerated as a confessor and hierarch of the Church. His feast day is celebrated on August 30.
