Saints Joachim and Anne: The Holy Ancestors of God and Parents of the Theotokos — Life, Miracles, and Prayers

Introduction: Who Were Saints Joachim and Anne?

Saints Joachim and Anne are among the most beloved saints in the Orthodox Church — the parents of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, and thus the grandparents of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh. They are venerated as the "Ancestors of God" — a title that reflects the extraordinary dignity of their role in the history of salvation. Their story, preserved in the Protoevangelium of James and in the unbroken tradition of the Church, is one of faith tested by long years of childlessness, prayer answered beyond all expectation, and a gift to God that changed the course of human history. They are the supreme patrons of married couples, of those struggling with infertility, and of grandparents, and their feast days are among the most joyful in the Orthodox calendar.

Their Story

The Sorrow of Childlessness

Joachim was a wealthy and devout man of the tribe of Judah, a descendant of King David. Anne was his wife, a woman of deep faith and prayer. They had been married for many years and had no children — a source of profound grief in the culture of ancient Israel, where childlessness was sometimes seen as a sign of divine disfavor. The grief of Joachim and Anne was intensified by public humiliation: when Joachim went to the Temple to offer his gifts, a priest refused to accept them, saying that a man without children had no right to offer gifts before those who had fulfilled the commandment to be fruitful and multiply.

Joachim, devastated, withdrew into the wilderness to fast and pray. Anne, left alone at home, also prayed with great intensity, weeping before God and asking Him to remove the reproach of her barrenness. Both of them prayed separately, in different places, with the same desperate faith — and God heard them both.

The Angelic Annunciation

An angel appeared to each of them separately — to Joachim in the wilderness and to Anne in her garden — with the same message: their prayer had been heard, and Anne would conceive and bear a child whose name would be spoken throughout the whole world. The angel told Anne to go to the Golden Gate of Jerusalem, where she would meet her husband. Joachim and Anne met at the Golden Gate, embraced with tears of joy, and returned home together. Anne conceived, and nine months later gave birth to the child who would become the Most Holy Theotokos — the one through whom the Son of God would enter the world.

The Presentation of Mary in the Temple

Joachim and Anne had made a vow that if God gave them a child, they would dedicate that child to His service. When Mary was three years old, they brought her to the Temple in Jerusalem and presented her to the priests. The child walked up the fifteen steps of the Temple unaided — a miracle that astonished all who witnessed it — and was received into the Temple, where she would live and be educated until her betrothal to Joseph. Joachim and Anne returned home, having given their most precious gift to God.

Repose

Both Joachim and Anne reposed before the Annunciation and the birth of Christ — they did not live to see the fulfillment of the promise that had been made to them. Yet they are venerated as those who, by their faith and their gift of their daughter to God, made possible the Incarnation of the Son of God. Their role in salvation history is second only to that of the Theotokos herself.

Prayers to Saints Joachim and Anne

Troparion (Tone 2)

Celebrating the memory of the righteous Joachim and Anne, we ask their intercession, O Lord: through their prayers, grant salvation to our souls.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Infertility

O holy ancestors of God, Joachim and Anne: you who wept before God for years in the grief of childlessness, who bore the humiliation of those who judged you, and who never stopped praying and trusting in His mercy — intercede for me before the throne of God. You know the ache of longing for a child and the silence of heaven that seems to give no answer. Pray that God may grant me the child I long for, or the grace to accept His will if He has a different plan, and the faith to trust that His plan is better than my own. You waited, and God gave you not just a child but the Mother of God herself. Help me to wait with the same faith. O holy Joachim and Anne, pray to God for us. Amen.

Prayer for Grandparents

O holy ancestors of God, Joachim and Anne, grandparents of our Lord Jesus Christ: intercede for all grandparents before the throne of God. Grant them the grace to be a source of faith, wisdom, and love for their grandchildren, as you were the source of the faith that formed the Most Holy Theotokos. Help them to see in their grandchildren the gift of God and to dedicate them to His service as you dedicated your daughter. O holy Joachim and Anne, pray to God for us. Amen.

Iconographic Depiction

Saints Joachim and Anne are depicted in Orthodox iconography with features that reflect their identity as the parents of the Theotokos:

  • Together: Almost always depicted together as a couple, reflecting their unity in faith and in their shared vocation as parents of the Theotokos
  • The Embrace at the Golden Gate: One of the most beloved iconographic scenes — Joachim and Anne embracing at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem after receiving the angelic annunciation
  • The Theotokos as a Child: Sometimes depicted holding or presenting the young Mary, reflecting their role as her parents
  • Elderly, Dignified Figures: Shown as an elderly couple, reflecting their advanced age at the time of Mary's birth
  • Serene, Joyful Faces: Their expressions reflect the joy of those whose long prayer has finally been answered beyond all expectation
