Saint Vladimir the Great: Enlightener of Rus and Equal to the Apostles — Life, Miracles, and Prayers*

Introduction: Who Was Saint Vladimir?

Saint Vladimir the Great — Prince of Kiev and Enlightener of Rus — is one of the most consequential figures in the history of Eastern Christianity. His decision to accept Orthodox Christianity from Constantinople in 988 AD and to baptize the Kievan Rus transformed the spiritual and cultural landscape of Eastern Europe forever, giving birth to the Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian Orthodox traditions that together form the largest body of Orthodox Christians in the world. He is venerated as "Equal to the Apostles" — the same title given to Saints Constantine and Helen, Nina the Enlightener, and Mary Magdalene — because his mission to an entire civilization was as transformative as the work of the original Twelve. He is the father of Orthodox Rus, and his feast day on July 15 is celebrated as a day of national and spiritual significance across the Slavic Orthodox world.

Early Life: The Pagan Prince

Vladimir Sviatoslavich was born around 958 AD, the son of Prince Sviatoslav I of Kiev and a woman named Malusha, who served in the household of Princess Olga — Vladimir's grandmother and the first Christian ruler of the Kievan Rus. After his father's death, Vladimir fought a civil war against his brothers for control of Kiev, emerging victorious around 980 AD as the sole ruler of the Kievan Rus.

In his early years as prince, Vladimir was a committed pagan — he erected idols to the Slavic gods in Kiev, offered sacrifices, and lived a life that the chronicles describe as dissolute and violent. He was, by his own later admission, a great sinner. And yet God had plans for him that he could not have imagined.

The Search for the True Faith

The Embassies

Around 986–987 AD, Vladimir undertook a remarkable inquiry into the major religions of his neighbors. He received embassies from the Volga Bulgars (who were Muslim), from the Germans (who were Latin Christian), from the Khazars (who were Jewish), and from the Byzantine Greeks (who were Orthodox). He listened to each presentation carefully and sent his own envoys to observe the worship of each religion in its homeland.

The Report from Constantinople

The envoys he sent to Constantinople attended the Divine Liturgy at the Hagia Sophia — the greatest church in the world at that time. Their report to Vladimir became one of the most famous passages in the Russian Primary Chronicle: "We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth, for on earth there is no such splendor or such beauty, and we are at a loss how to describe it. We only know that God dwells there among men, and their service is fairer than the ceremonies of other nations. For we cannot forget that beauty." Vladimir's decision was made.

Baptism and the Christianization of Rus

The Capture of Cherson and Baptism

In 988 AD, Vladimir captured the Byzantine city of Cherson in Crimea and used it as leverage to negotiate a marriage alliance with the Byzantine Emperor Basil II — demanding the hand of the Emperor's sister, the Princess Anna, in marriage. The Emperor agreed on the condition that Vladimir be baptized. Vladimir accepted, was baptized in Cherson, and married Anna. He returned to Kiev a Christian prince.

The Baptism of Kiev

Vladimir's first act upon returning to Kiev was to order the destruction of the pagan idols he had erected — the great idol of Perun, the thunder god, was dragged through the streets and thrown into the Dnieper River. He then summoned the people of Kiev to the river and had them baptized en masse. The Baptism of Rus — celebrated on July 15, 988 — is one of the defining moments of Eastern European history, and its effects are felt to this day in the faith of hundreds of millions of Orthodox Christians.

Transformation of Character

The chronicles record a remarkable transformation in Vladimir after his baptism. The man who had been violent, dissolute, and ruthless became known for his mercy, his generosity to the poor, and his care for the weak. He abolished the death penalty, fed the poor from his own table, and sent wagons of food through the streets of Kiev for those who could not come to him. He built churches, established schools, and invited Greek clergy to teach the new faith. His people called him "Vladimir the Fair Sun."

Repose

Saint Vladimir reposed in the Lord on July 15, 1015, at his country estate of Berestovo near Kiev. He was approximately 57 years old. He was buried in the Church of the Tithes in Kiev — the first stone church in the Kievan Rus, which he had built. He was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church, and his feast day is celebrated as the Day of the Baptism of Rus across the Orthodox Slavic world.

Prayers to Saint Vladimir

Troparion (Tone 4)

O holy equal-to-the-apostles Vladimir, thou wast like the merchant who found the pearl of great price when thou didst find the Orthodox faith. Thou didst enlighten the land of Rus with holy baptism and didst adorn it with churches and monasteries. Intercede with Christ our God that He may save our souls.

Prayer for Conversion and Renewal

O holy equal-to-the-apostles Vladimir, enlightener of Rus and father of Orthodox Slavic Christianity: you who were once a great sinner and became a great saint — intercede for me before the throne of God. You know what it is to live far from God and to be transformed by His grace. Look upon me in my own distance from Him and pray that He may draw me back, as He drew you, through whatever means He chooses. Grant me the courage to destroy the idols in my own heart as you destroyed the idols of Kiev, and to give myself to Him as completely as you gave yourself and your entire people. O holy Vladimir, pray to God for us. Amen.
