Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr: Healer of Body and Soul — Life, Miracles, and Prayers
Share
Introduction: Who Was Saint Panteleimon?
Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr is one of the most beloved healing saints in the entire Orthodox Church — venerated across Greek, Russian, Serbian, Romanian, and all Eastern Christian traditions as a powerful intercessor for the sick, the suffering, and those in need of physical and spiritual healing. His name means "All-Merciful" in Greek, and it was given to him at his baptism as a prophecy of the ministry he would carry out both in his earthly life and through his heavenly intercession. A physician by training, he healed the sick freely and without payment, following the example of Christ — and he sealed his witness with his blood, dying as a martyr under the Emperor Maximian around 305 AD.
Early Life and Education
A Divided Household
Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia, the capital of Bithynia in Asia Minor, around 275 AD. His father, Eustorgios, was a wealthy pagan nobleman. His mother, Eubula, was a devout Christian who raised her son in the faith from his earliest years. When Panteleimon was still a child, his mother died, and his father — who had never converted — enrolled him in the best schools of the city, eventually sending him to study medicine under the renowned physician Euphrosynos.
Panteleimon proved to be an exceptionally gifted student. He mastered the medical arts quickly and came to the attention of Emperor Maximian himself, who wished to appoint him as court physician. At this point in his life, Panteleimon had drifted from the Christian faith of his mother and was living as a pagan, though he had never been formally initiated into paganism.
Encounter with Saint Hermolaus
The turning point of Panteleimon's life came through a chance encounter with an elderly Christian priest named Hermolaus, who had survived the earlier persecutions and was living quietly in Nicomedia. Hermolaus recognized the young physician's gifts and his restless heart, and began to speak to him about Christ. Over several conversations, Panteleimon was drawn deeper into the faith his mother had planted in him as a child.
The decisive moment came when Panteleimon encountered a child who had died from a serpent's bite, the serpent still coiled beside the body. Panteleimon prayed to Christ — the first time he had prayed in years — and asked Him to raise the child if He was truly the Son of God. The child came back to life, and the serpent died. Panteleimon went immediately to Hermolaus and asked to be baptized. He was given the name Panteleimon — "All-Merciful" — at his baptism.
Ministry of Healing
Healing the Blind Man
After his baptism, Panteleimon's first public miracle was the healing of a man who had been blind from birth. He had spent all his money on physicians without result. Panteleimon prayed over him in the name of Jesus Christ, and the man received his sight. The miracle was witnessed by many, and word spread quickly through Nicomedia.
Healing Without Payment
Panteleimon gave up his position at the imperial court and opened his practice to all — rich and poor alike — healing without charge. He visited prisoners, the sick in their homes, and those whom other physicians had given up on. He healed not only with medicine but with prayer, always invoking the name of Christ and making clear that it was Christ, not he himself, who was the true physician.
His fellow physicians, jealous of his reputation and alarmed by his open Christianity, denounced him to the Emperor. Maximian, who had hoped to make Panteleimon his court physician, was furious. He summoned the young doctor and demanded that he renounce Christ and offer sacrifice to the pagan gods.
Martyrdom
Trials and Tortures
Panteleimon refused to renounce Christ. The Emperor, hoping to break his resolve, subjected him to a series of terrible tortures. He was burned with torches, stretched on the rack, thrown into boiling lead, cast into the sea with a stone around his neck, thrown to wild beasts in the arena, and broken on the wheel. Each time, he emerged unharmed — the fire did not burn him, the sea cast him back to shore, the animals lay down at his feet, and the wheel stopped turning. Witnesses to these miracles converted to Christianity on the spot, and many were martyred alongside him.
Beheading and the Miracle of the Olive Tree
Finally, the Emperor ordered Panteleimon to be beheaded. When the executioner's sword struck his neck, milk flowed from the wound instead of blood — a sign of his purity and his union with Christ. The olive tree to which he had been bound burst into bloom and fruit at the moment of his death. The executioner himself converted and was martyred. Panteleimon reposed in the Lord around 305 AD, at approximately thirty years of age.
