Introduction: The Protection of the Mother of God
The feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, known in Greek as the Pokrov, celebrates one of the most beloved and powerful manifestations of the Virgin Mary's intercession for humanity. This sacred feast commemorates a miraculous vision in which the Mother of God spread her protective veil over the faithful, shielding them from harm and covering them with her maternal love. It stands as a profound reminder that we are never alone in our struggles - the Theotokos continually intercedes for us before her Son.
The Sacred Vision at Blachernae
The Historical Context
In the 10th century, Constantinople faced grave danger from invading forces. The faithful gathered at the Church of Blachernae, where precious relics of the Theotokos - her veil and robe - were kept. Throughout the night, they prayed fervently for deliverance, calling upon the Mother of God to protect their city.
Saint Andrew's Vision
During the all-night vigil on October 1, 910 AD, a holy fool named Andrew (later canonized as Saint Andrew of Constantinople) stood in prayer with his disciple Epiphanius. At the fourth hour of the night, Saint Andrew beheld an extraordinary vision: the church filled with heavenly light, and a procession of saints entered, led by Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Theologian.
Then, the Most Holy Theotokos herself appeared, radiant with divine glory, walking upon the air. She was accompanied by a multitude of angels and saints. The Virgin Mary knelt in prayer before the altar, tears streaming down her face as she interceded for all humanity. Rising from prayer, she removed her luminous veil and spread it over all the people gathered in the church, covering them with her protection.
Saint Andrew turned to Epiphanius and asked, "Do you see the Lady, the Queen of all, praying for the whole world?" Epiphanius replied, "I see, holy Father, and I am in awe." As long as the Theotokos remained present, her veil shone with a glory brighter than the sun. When she departed, the veil became invisible, but her protection remained over the faithful.
The Miracle and Its Aftermath
Following this miraculous vision, Constantinople was delivered from the threatening invasion. The city attributed its salvation to the intercession and protection of the Theotokos. This event became the foundation for one of the most cherished feasts in the Orthodox Church, particularly beloved in Slavic traditions.

Prayer to the Protection of the Theotokos
O Most Holy Theotokos, accept our supplications and prayers. Deliver us from all necessity and tribulation, from all visible and invisible enemies, and from sudden death. Protect us from pestilence, earthquake, flood, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners, and civil war. O Virgin Mother of God, by your holy and all-powerful prayers, disperse all our enemies and adversaries. Destroy their counsels and humble their pride. Cover us with your holy Protection and guard us from all evil. We have no other help, no other hope but you, O Pure Virgin. You are our only intercessor before God. Help us and have mercy on us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
