Holy Prophet Elijah: The Fiery Prophet and Forerunner of the Second Coming — Life, Miracles, and Prayers

Introduction: Who Was the Holy Prophet Elijah?

The Holy Prophet Elijah — called Elias in the Greek tradition — is one of the greatest figures in the entire history of salvation, venerated in the Orthodox Church as the supreme prophet of the Old Testament, the forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ, and one of only two human beings in the history of the world who were taken up to heaven without tasting death. He stands alongside Moses at the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, representing the Law and the Prophets in their fulfillment in the person of Jesus. He is venerated with extraordinary intensity throughout the Orthodox world — his feast day on July 20 is one of the most widely celebrated in the Orthodox calendar, and his chapels on mountaintops throughout Greece, Cyprus, and the Middle East reflect the ancient tradition that he ascended to heaven in a fiery chariot from a high place. He is the patron of thunderstorms, of rain, of fire, and of all who are called to speak the word of God without compromise.

Life and Ministry in Scripture

The Drought and the Ravens

Elijah appears suddenly in the First Book of Kings with no introduction — simply as "Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead" — and immediately announces to the wicked King Ahab of Israel that there will be no rain except at his word. He then withdraws to the brook Cherith, where ravens bring him bread and meat morning and evening, and he drinks from the brook. When the brook dries up, God sends him to the widow of Zarephath, whose jar of flour and jug of oil miraculously do not run out throughout the drought, and whose son Elijah raises from the dead.

The Contest on Mount Carmel

The supreme episode of Elijah's ministry is the great contest on Mount Carmel — one of the most dramatic scenes in all of Scripture. Elijah challenges the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah to a contest: each side will prepare a sacrifice, and the god who answers by fire will be acknowledged as the true God. The prophets of Baal cry out to their god from morning until evening — dancing, cutting themselves, prophesying — and nothing happens. Then Elijah prepares his sacrifice, drenches it with water three times until the water fills the trench around the altar, and prays a simple prayer: "O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word." Fire falls from heaven and consumes the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and the water in the trench. The people fall on their faces and cry: "The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!" The prophets of Baal are seized and executed, and the drought ends with a great rain.

The Still Small Voice

After his great victory, Elijah flees into the wilderness in fear of Queen Jezebel, who has sworn to kill him. He collapses under a juniper tree and asks God to take his life, saying: "It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers." An angel touches him twice, giving him food and water for the journey, and he travels forty days and forty nights to Mount Horeb — the mountain of God. There God speaks to him — not in the wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but in a still small voice — and sends him back to his mission. The episode is one of the most humanly moving in all of Scripture: the greatest prophet of Israel, exhausted and despairing, sustained by an angel and renewed by the voice of God in the silence.

The Ascent in the Fiery Chariot

Elijah did not die. At the end of his earthly ministry, he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, in a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire, before the eyes of his disciple Elisha. His mantle fell upon Elisha as he ascended — the sign of the transmission of his prophetic spirit. He is one of only two human beings — the other being Enoch — who were taken to heaven without tasting death, and Orthodox tradition holds that he will return before the Second Coming of Christ to prepare the way for the Lord's return, as John the Baptist prepared the way for His first coming.

The Transfiguration

Elijah appears again in the New Testament at the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, standing alongside Moses and speaking with Jesus about His coming Passion. His presence at the Transfiguration — representing the Prophets, as Moses represents the Law — confirms his supreme status among the prophets of the Old Testament and his intimate connection with the mystery of Christ.

Prayers to the Holy Prophet Elijah

Troparion (Tone 4)

O holy prophet Elijah, the great forerunner of the second glorious coming of Christ our God: thou didst call down fire from heaven upon the sacrifice and didst ascend to heaven in a fiery chariot. Thou dost stand before God as a great intercessor. Intercede for us, we pray thee.

Prayer in Exhaustion and Despair

O holy prophet Elijah, fiery prophet and servant of God: you who collapsed under the juniper tree and asked God to take your life after your greatest victory — intercede for me before the throne of God. You know what it is to be exhausted in God's service, to feel that you have given everything and have nothing left, to feel utterly alone in your faith. The angel touched you and gave you food for the journey. Ask God to touch me now in my exhaustion, to give me what I need for the next step, and to speak to me in the still small voice that I can only hear when the wind and the earthquake and the fire have passed. O holy Elijah, pray to God for us. Amen.

Short Prayer

O holy prophet Elijah, forerunner of the Second Coming and fiery servant of God: intercede for us before Christ our God, that He may grant us rain in due season, courage to speak His word, and salvation. Amen.

  • The Fiery Chariot: Often depicted in or ascending in the fiery chariot, with horses of fire — his most distinctive iconographic scene
  • Ravens: Sometimes depicted with ravens bringing him bread, recalling his time at the brook Cherith
  • The Angel: Sometimes shown with the angel who fed him under the juniper tree
  • Mount Carmel or Mount Horeb: Sometimes depicted with a mountain in the background
  • Intense, Burning Face: His expression reflects the fire of his prophetic zeal — a man consumed by love for God and burning with righteous anger at idolatry and injustice
