Archangel Raphael: The Divine Healer and Guide of Travelers — Life, Miracles, and Prayers

Introduction: Who Is Archangel Raphael?

Archangel Raphael is one of the three archangels named in Holy Scripture — alongside Michael and Gabriel — and is venerated throughout the Orthodox Church as the supreme heavenly healer, the guide of travelers, and the angel of joyful encounters. His name in Hebrew means "God heals" or "God has healed," and his entire ministry as revealed in Scripture and Tradition is one of healing, guidance, and protection. He is beloved across all Orthodox traditions and is invoked especially by the sick, by those undergoing medical treatment, by travelers, and by those seeking a spouse or companion. His feast day is celebrated together with the other bodiless powers on November 8, and he is also commemorated on the Sunday after Theophany.

Raphael in Holy Scripture

The Book of Tobit

The primary scriptural account of Archangel Raphael is found in the Book of Tobit — one of the deuterocanonical books accepted by the Orthodox Church as part of the Old Testament canon. The story is one of the most beautiful in all of Scripture: a righteous man named Tobit, living in exile in Nineveh, has been blinded and fallen into poverty. His son Tobias must travel to a distant city to collect a debt. God sends Raphael — disguised as a human companion named Azariah — to guide and protect Tobias on the journey.

During the journey, Raphael instructs Tobias to catch a fish and preserve its heart, liver, and gall. He guides Tobias to the home of his kinswoman Sarah, who has been afflicted by a demon that has killed each of her seven husbands on their wedding night. Raphael instructs Tobias to burn the fish's heart and liver as incense, which drives away the demon. Tobias marries Sarah, and they return safely to Tobit. Raphael then instructs Tobias to apply the fish's gall to his father's eyes — and Tobit's sight is restored.

At the end of the story, Raphael reveals his true identity: "I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord... I was sent to put you to the test. And at the same time God sent me to heal you and Sarah your daughter-in-law. I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One." (Tobit 12:15)

The Pool of Bethesda

In the Gospel of John (5:1-4), an angel is described as descending periodically into the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem and stirring the water, after which the first person to enter the pool was healed of whatever disease they had. Orthodox tradition identifies this angel as Raphael — the healing archangel whose ministry of physical restoration continues in the New Testament era.

Raphael in Orthodox Tradition

Orthodox tradition venerates Raphael as one of the seven archangels who stand before the throne of God — the same seven mentioned in the Book of Tobit and the Book of Revelation. He is understood as the angel of healing in the broadest sense: healing of the body, healing of relationships, healing of the soul wounded by sin, and the healing of grief and loneliness. His role as guide and companion on Tobias's journey has made him the patron of all travelers, and his role in bringing Tobias and Sarah together has made him the patron of those seeking a spouse.

Prayers to Archangel Raphael

Troparion (Tone 4)

O holy Archangel Raphael, thou dost stand before the throne of God and present the prayers of the saints before the Holy One. Thou didst guide Tobias on his journey, heal the blind, and drive away the demon. Come now to our aid, heal our infirmities, guide us on the paths of life, and intercede for us before the throne of God, that He may grant us His great mercy.

Prayer for Healing

O holy Archangel Raphael, whose very name means "God heals": you who restored sight to the blind Tobit, drove away the demon that afflicted Sarah, and guided young Tobias safely through every danger — intercede for me before the throne of God. You carry the prayers of the saints before the Holy One; carry mine now. Ask the Lord, the true Physician of souls and bodies, to grant me healing according to His holy will. Whether He heals me in this life or calls me to Himself, let His will be done — but intercede that His mercy may be poured out upon me in my need. O holy Raphael, angel of healing and guide of travelers, pray to God for us. Amen.

Prayer for Travelers

O holy Archangel Raphael, guide and companion of Tobias on his long journey: walk beside me now as I travel. Protect me from every danger seen and unseen, guide my steps on the right path, and bring me safely to my destination and home again. As you accompanied Tobias and revealed yourself at the journey's end, reveal to me the presence of God in every mile of my own journey. O holy Raphael, pray to God for us. Amen.
