The Role of Icons in Orthodox Christian Life
Icons hold a central place in Orthodox Christian worship and daily devotion. They are not simply religious images but sacred representations that invite the faithful into prayer, reflection, and communion with the saints. The purpose of an icon is not to imitate earthly realism but to reveal the transfigured, holy state of the person depicted. This is why Orthodox iconography follows established forms, colors, and symbolism. Whether painted, printed, or embroidered, icons serve as windows into the Kingdom and help the faithful cultivate a life of prayer, humility, and remembrance of God.
